Directions: listening

We will start with the listening to the recording. In this recording we can hear four speakers (a variety of accents are shown, raising students’ awareness on the different realizations of the English language) whose indications will have to be followed by the students with the goal of getting to a specific destination.
In order to do so, a map of a city will be projected on the board (Annex 4) so that the students can locate themselves in the starting point trying to reach the required arrival point. The places in the map will be reviewed by the teacher, to make sure that they remember the target language by asking direct questions to the group. Each of the speakers in the audio track will be played twice, giving students time to locate themselves and move around the map.

Directions: speaking

To practice pronunciation, the class will be divided into groups of four students each. Each student will give some indications similar to those in the recording and the other learners will have to say the place where they have arrived. (20-25 minutes).

If the activity goes by smoothly and there is some extra time, some students may volunteer to give directions to the rest of the class (emphasizing in the correct pronunciation and intonation) so that they can try and guess the target destination (5-10 minutes, if time allows).

Directions: writing

On the map we can see marked different public places, there is also a small reminder of the most used indications and prepositions and the introduction to the activity.

In the drive there is a file shared file with two activities, download the file, do the activities and share it in the same folder on the drive.

Prepositions of place: writing

We use prepositions of place to say where something is located. In this post we will work with the prepositions: at, in and on.
First, read this page to understand the differences and check your knowledge with this little game.

To finish, write two different sentences with each preposition on the padlet wall.

And now, do you know the difference between at, in and on?
Surely yes!
